_10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it[c] stood the LORD, and he said: “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying_.
The use of ladders is universal. With ladders, we climb to heights that we could not have reached no matter how hard we jump. Jacob on his return to the land of his fathers had a stop at Bethel and he fell asleep. God chose to speak to him in a dream by showing a ladder. Did God need to show a ladder linking heaven and earth to give Jacob the message that He was with him just as He had been with his father and grandfather Abraham? God did not have to; but He chose to for a special reason.
Fast forward into the New Testament and read about Jesus and Nathanael:
49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” 50 Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” John 1:49-51 God in the Old Testament manifested Himself to Jacob and the manifestation was prophetic. It presented the coming of Jesus as the ladder between heaven and earth. This revelation ties in with Jesus’ command to His hearers to search the scriptures so they can know Him. He was making reference to the Old Testament. Jesus has been there all the time! He links us to heaven; and that is the greatest opportunity and privilege any human can have. Take full advantage!
1. Thank God for the Ladder that He has provided to link heaven to earth in the person of His Son Jesus Christ. It is a free access that is always open.
2. Ask God for grace to take advantage of this link so you can continually come into the presence of God for your benefit.
3. Father, I thank you for giving us the Mediator between Yourself and us. Give us the freedom to access this grace so we can always dwell in Your presence.
I declare that there is no hindrance between me and my heavenly Father. I have free access through God’s divine Ladder, the Holy Spirit. I walk into God’s presence and take all that is mine in the name of Jesus.
