Ways of Identifying and Avoiding Spiritual Deception

A genuine prophetic revelations from the Lord always come to us in visions and messages that agree with Scriptures which concern the man in Christ.

Any instruction received in this form but not in line with the Scriptures must be discarded or not to be acted upon.

Sometimes, some people receive revelations and visions that instruct them to do something or act in ways that do not agree with the scriptures and it sometimes becomes very difficult to get them to discard such instructions because maybe they saw “an angel” or a vision.

Seeing a vision or seeing even ‘a glittering angel’ or even ‘a Jesus’ doesn’t mean the message you received from them is authentic; because Satan can transform himself as an angel of light just to deceive; “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” 2Cor 11:14

This is the reason why for every message to be acceptable in Christ, such a message must agree with the written word of God that concerns the man in Christ.

If it contradicts the word, we don’t have to act on it, because God wouldn’t speak in opposition to His word. This is why the Holy Spirit through Paul admonishes us that; “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

As we said before, so I say now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Gal 1:8-9

Every revelation under heaven must pass through the scrutiny of the Word of God. God’s word is the final authority, not personal visions, dreams and revelations.

Every prophetic revelation or vision must be put to the test; it must be made to pass through the lens of the Scriptures for effective scrutiny by the word before we allow it to give direction to our lives in order to stay on the safer side. This is because;

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;  Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
Forbidding marrying, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.” 1Tim 4:1-3

Deceiving spirits have gone out to deceive many people and to lead them astray, and many have gone astray following the leadings of these deceiving spirits because they refused to judge their revelations and visions by the pure word of God.

We need to understand that Satan uses similar tools that the Lord uses in communicating, guiding, instructing, correcting and directing us—be it objects, people, visions and revelations etc. But, his focus is to distract, redirect and deceive us from the way of life.

In the Old testament we see lying spirit delude King Ahab into a battle that brought his tragic death.
Here, the devil (deceiving spirit) used prophecy—the same tool used by God to get Ahab dead. 400 hundred prophets were deluded by the spirit of deception. (Ref. 1 Kings 22:1-40)
